The 2008 Recession started in 2007 in Florida, but SoBe was cushioned by foreign money buying places in cash. The clubs on SoBe made the mistake of going hip hop. Tony Lopez hides behind a pair of sunglasses and explains why he looks so rough: "I got jumped for being gay." A bloody gash on his forehead is fastened with black stitches, scrapes cover his cheeks, and his eyes - once lined with mascara - are badly swollen. Three days earlier, everything had been fine.

Lopez, a 29-year-old employee of MAC Cosmetics, was celebrating the White Party - the world's largest fundraiser for AIDS - in South Beach. He dressed up, watched a drag show with two friends, and ordered a vodka cranberry cocktail at Twist nightclub. November 29 when he wandered by himself to the take-out window of David's Cuban Café on Meridian Avenue near Lincoln Road. As he approached the line for food, an aggressive 20-something staggered up to him. Tony shook a Marlboro Mild from the pack and handed him one. Right then, a gang - Tony remembers four men - "appeared out of the woodwork." They shoved him into the alley behind the restaurant, yelled "Fucking faggot!" and began to punch him. He fell to the ground and tried to shield his head as they kicked him in the face. When he awoke, nursing a concussion in a dreary hospital room, he realized his attackers hadn't bothered to steal his jewelry, wallet, or cell phone.
They were more interested, he believes, in beating up a queer. It's the homophobic attacks that shock me. I never thought South Beach would turn so ugly towards us, especially after all we did to bring it to new glory. It will be a wonderful treat for yourself! Lynn S.I never went to Miami but I remember reading about it. If you want to have a sneak peek of the Cuban flavor, definitely go with the sampler platter. With complex and different flavor profile for all of the three dishes, each of them shined by themselves. OMG what a dream! The seasoning was right on point. There was even a small piece of pork crackling on the top. I wouldn't want to change anything of it. But this platter was like everything I could ask for. If the stake was the only thing we tried, I would have given this place a 3. I tried the sample platter, consisting of their signature beef, pork, and chicken dishes. The caramelized onions were pretty good though, balancing out the greasiness from the stake. And that was exactly the kind the texture we got from this dish.
The stake really lacked seasoning, and was a little chewy. If Yelp allows half point, I'd give this place 4.5. And now I believed that they were not joking when they said that lol. Before coming to Miami, I was told by my friends that I could find a lot of good Cuban restaurants here.
